I pull up to the small pub where Toad and I like to eat. His car is already here, meaning he’s already gotten a table.

The restaurant is dimly lit when I step inside, the building bathed in the familiar orange lighting. Toad waves from a booth in the corner, and I make my way around the tables to join him.

“Hey! What’s up, man?” He asks, gesturing for me to sit across from him. “I already ordered. Figured you’d want the usual.”

“Yeah, that’s great, thanks,” I say as I slide into the booth. “I had a date with Kate yesterday.”

Toad’s eyebrows shoot up to his forehead.

“Prissy ice queen Kate? Really? What gives?” Toad references the name I’ve used to refer to her before our date.

“I think I was wrong about her. She’s not like that. She’s actually really cool and fun to be around. She just about had an orgasm over some tacos then she crushed me at mini golf. We ended up back at her place…” I trail off as the waiter drops some food by our table.

The burger set in front of me looks delicious, the bun toasted to perfection and dressed perfectly. I grab the bottle of ketchup sitting on the table and smother my burger in it, eager to eat.

“You went to her place? That’s surprising.”

I take a bite of my burger and savor the flavor before responding.

“Before yesterday, I also would have thought so. But she’s a totally different person when she lets loose. She has this competitive edge that makes things exciting. We were neck and neck the entire game of mini golf before she pulled through with two fewer strokes at the end. She was so excited you’d think she won the PGA title.”

“You think you’ll see her again?”

“Of course. She’s amazing, funny, and smart. I would be nuts to let her go without seeing if there’s potential for something more than just one night.”

“Wow, I’ve never heard you talk about a woman like this before. You must really like her,” Toad comments.

He’s right, in a way. I’ve been with plenty of women- I love the flirting and the chase. Usually after I’ve been with one though, I don’t feel interested in seeing her again. But with Kate it’s different- I don’t want this to end with her. I can’t wait to see her again.

I don’t know what it is about her that is making me feel this way. She’s fun, but a lot of the women that I’ve been with are fun.

With her, it’s different though. Yesterday, I couldn’t stop my stomach from fluttering and my heart from picking up the pace. When she looks at me with those beautiful brown eyes, I can’t help but melt a little.

“I really do. She’s incredible. I know this sounds douchey, but I’ve never felt this way about a girl before. It surprised me how fun she was when she finally let loose. You’d like her a lot.”

Before Toad can respond my phone starts ringing. I pull it out of my pocket and sigh when I see my father’s number lighting up the screen.
